TEHRAN - On June 3, 2026, one of the most unexpected outcomes in recent United Nations history occurred. Germany, a country that for decades viewed itself as a leading contender for a greater role in the world’s top security body—and an aspiring permanent member of the UN Security Council—failed in its bid for a non-permanent seat. In the General Assembly vote for the 2027–2028 term, Portugal secured 134 votes and Austria 131, winning the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group (WEOG). Germany, by contrast, received only 104 votes and was eliminated in the first round. It was the first time in UN history that Germany failed to win election to the Security Council, abruptly ending what many in Berlin had long considered a virtually assured outcome.
