Iran is in the final stages of preparing a nomination dossier for the inclusion of its historical Asbads—traditional vertical-axis windmills—on the UNESCO World Heritage list. These unique windmills, which hold cultural and historical significance, are situated across three provinces: South Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, and Sistan-Baluchestan. The announcement was made by a senior official from Iran’s cultural heritage organization on a recent Saturday, highlighting the country’s efforts to preserve and internationally recognize its distinctive architectural and technological heritage. This move aims to protect the Asbads and promote awareness of Iran’s indigenous adaptations to wind energy, underscoring the historical ingenuity in harnessing natural resources.
