TEHRAN - On June 3, 2026, one of the most unexpected outcomes in recent United Nations history occurred. Germany, a country that for decades viewed itself as a leading contender for a greater role in the world’s top security body—and an aspiring permanent member of the UN Security Council—failed in its bid for a non-permanent seat. In the General Assembly vote for the 2027–2028 term, Portugal secured 134 votes and Austria 131, winning the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group (WEOG).
