Above the Ruins of War; Iran's Role in Establishing Lasting Peace in Tajikistan

Tehran - IRNA - The twenty-ninth anniversary of the signing of the peace and national reconciliation agreement in Tajikistan is an opportunity to revisit one of the most successful mediation experiences in the post-Soviet space; an agreement that on June 27, 1997 (6 Tir 1376 in the Iranian calendar) ended five years of civil war in Tajikistan. In this context, the Islamic Republic of Iran, relying on historical, cultural, and linguistic ties with the people of Tajikistan and through hosting negotiations and facilitating dialogue among the conflicting parties, played an influential role in smoothing the path to peace; a role that began in Mashhad and Tehran and culminated in Moscow with the signing of a document that transformed the future of Tajikistan.
