The Islamic Revolution of Iran triumphed on February 11, 1979 (22 Bahman 1357), and it seemed that the heirs of the revolution were from old and well-known members of recognized parties such as the National Front, the Freedom Movement, the Tudeh Party, and well-known guerrilla organizations like the People's Mujahedin and the People's Fedayeen. The real winners were relatively known clerics who had gathered around Ruhollah Khomeini in the final year of the revolution, with a less extensive activist background compared to older politicians and non-clerical former prisoners. Five of them announced the founding of the Islamic Republican Party just five days after the revolution's victory. Akbar Rafsanjani, Ali Khamenei, Mohammad-Javad Bahonar, and Abolkarim Mousavi Ardebili formed around the party's main figure Mohammad Beheshti.
