The real winners were relatively known clerics who had gathered around Ruhollah Khomeini in the final year of the revolution, with a less extensive activist background compared to older politicians and non-clerical former prisoners. Five of them announced the founding of the Islamic Republican Party just five days after the revolution's victory. Akbar Rafsanjani, Ali Khamenei, Mohammad-Javad Bahonar, and Abolkarim Mousavi Ardebili formed around the party's main figure Mohammad Beheshti.
