A veteran historian and narrator of Mashhad's history, explaining the traditions of mourning reading and grieving in Khorasan, said: Mourning chanting in old Mashhad was a specialized and deep-rooted ritual that, in addition to preserving mourning culture, played an important role in protecting Iranian musical systems. The 'Ashura Puppet Opera' (2008), as Behrouz Gharibpour states, was the 'beginning of the national opera' and, as music experts say, 'the first attempt at creating opera in the style of the Iranian school of opera.' Despite this, both he and the creator faced numerous accusations. The Bahrain government, amid escalating regional tensions following the Iran war, has imposed new restrictions on holding Ashura ceremonies. Besides shortening the duration of the event, any public mourning for the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran has been banned.
